Maundy Thursday

The AME Zion Book of Worship explains that the word “maundy” means command.  It was on this night that Christ instituted, by His command, our continual remembrance of Him and His Work on our behalf when we share in the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper.

Maundy Thursday falls on the Thursday before Easter.  It honors the Washing of the Feet and Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the Apostles, as described in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, the canonical gospels.

Good Friday

The AME Zion Church commemorates Good Friday. Traditionally, there is a Worship Service with selected hymns and meditation scriptures.   The Seven Last Sayings from the Cross are sermonically presented.

The First Word “Father forgive them for they know not what they do.“ Luke 23:24

The Second Word “Today shalt thou be with me in paradise.“ Luke 23:43

The Third Word  “Woman, behold thy son!. . . Behold thy mother!“ John 19:26,27

The Fourth Word “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?“ Matthew 27:45,46

The Fifth Word “I thirst.“  John 19:28

The Sixth Word  “It is finished.“  John 19:30

The Seventh Word “Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit.“ Luke 23:46

The Invitation to Christian Discipleship is extended and the clergy gives the benediction.
